Mount Elgon Sasa Route
This four day tour takes us along the fastest route to the Mount Elgon’s highest peak, Wagagai. The Sasa trail is a tough climb and despite the 4321m altitude of Wagagai, it does not require specialist mountaineering equipment.
Elgon is the oldest and largest free standing volcano in East Africa, the eighth highest mountain in Africa and offers great views and a range of trails of varying difficulty and length. This tour is the most popular for its intensity and is often used as preparation for nearby Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
We start at Budadari (1250m) at the entrance to Mount Elgon National Park. It is straight into a long and tough climb, over steep terrain and we arrive at Sasa Camp (1700m) approximately seven hours later.
A much shorter and easier climb today as we continue up to Mude Camp (3500m). It is a four to five hour climb through forest. Arriving early in the afternoon offers a chance to rest and conserve energies for tomorrow’s final ascent or to climb Jackson’s Summit (4165m). You choose.
Day 3
Mude Camp - Wagagai - Mude Camp
This is a long day with eight or nine hours walking over varying terrain and covering almost 18km. Shortly after leaving Mude, we pass out of the forest and into the moorland zone, with its strange giant lobelia and heather creating a scene straight from a science fiction film. We continue up to the Wagagai Summit (4321m) and enjoy the stunning views. Then it is back down the way we came to Mude Camp.
After breakfast we continue back down through the forest to Budadari, where the tour vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Mbale, where the tour ends.
Note that the tour can begin and end in Kampala or Entebbe with the inclusion of an extra day and supplementary fees.
