SORTOI EDUCATION, HEALTH & AGRICULTURE VOLUNTEER PROJECT

Ranger safari tours works with Soroti Catholics diocese in a project aimed to improve education, health and agriculture in a disadvantaged region of Uganda.

The project was started in order to provide care for the victims of HIV/AIDS (of which there are many in Uganda) but as with many charities, it became obvious that the problem needs to be tackled at the root. And so it now incorporates health care, education and crop production.

WHERE

Soroti is a small town located in the North East of Uganda, approximately 6 hours from Kampala. Wildlife areas are within easy reach, you won't be short of something to do in your free time!

ACTIVITIES

As the program has limited funding, it cannot afford to recruit new teachers, health workers and agricultural officers. Help is therefore needed to assist the existing staff, to implement project activities and to share experiences with the children and adults. The support of volunteers is paramount in order to continue providing a basic educational requirement to the children and adults, giving them the chance for a better future and sustainable food production.

Your primary role will be to help teach English, although you may also have the option to get involved in other subject areas. Outside of class there is also the opportunity to help coach sports. Sports classes are held before and after school and any assistance or knowledge you can bring would be much welcome.

REQUIREMENTS

No specific skills are required as basic training will be provided at the start of the placement. However, whatever skills you do bring, will be put to use. Whether you are a good communicator, a hard worker, keen learner or lateral thinker, your efforts will be appreciated. And in exchange, you will learn plenty about culture, species interaction, human and environmental conflicts and land use management.

ACCOMODATION

Volunteers will stay in Soroti town, where most facilities can be easily reached. However, your work may involve travelling outside to local villages. A mosquito net is of great importance as the area is malaria prone.

FOOD

Breakfast and supper will be provided at your accommodation. Food is generally simple (rice, beans, mashed banana) and you will not go hungry, however, if you would like luxuries such as chocolates, crisps and sweets you will have to buy them yourself. There is plenty of fruit in the village including avocado, sweet bananas and watermelon. Lunch will be provided on site.

OTHER INFO

As this is a small project, we only accept a maximum of 2 volunteers at any one time. There is a minimum placement of 2 weeks, although we highly recommend at least 4 weeks to get the most from the experience.
